Still Blue
Ownership, Authorship, and Ethereality
Grad School undoubtedly humbled me, as i talked to my now peers and then professors they explained that they too did not have it all figured out when they touched down to MICA. I had all these brilliant ideas about what thesis would be and what it wouldnt be, how I wouldnt be typing down to the wire because I knew what I wanted to do and oh how wrong I was. But through my community i was able to amplify the ideas and passions id always held close to me. The power of representation, the lineage and story of color, the stability of memory and Sankofa. All these themes came up while i was writing, and the individuals around me led me straight to the language I needed to process my process. On this journey Imani Perrys Blacks in Blue was recommended for my practice, this book would go on to inform the largest peace of “The Color The Culler and The Colored” series. inspired by Hype Williams “Belly” Blue was made to be ethereal and magical in this film, with the steep history from Imani perry conjoined with the film artistry, the marrying of information allowed me to materialize memory and substantiate the true blue in black culture. Blue is more than sadness it is the relinquishing of power, it is dreamlike, it is….. ours
